MCofS Winter Mountain Safety Talk, Aviemore

Heather Morning, safety adviser for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, gives a wealth of useful information on how to enjoy the mountains safely in winter. She covers navigation, equipment, choice of route, avalanches and weather conditions. Heather, who has been a member of the Cairngorms Mountain Rescue Team for 12 years and a professional mountaineer for 20 years, will illustrate her talk with a set of beautiful photographs. The talk is free, and a meal beforehand, starting at 7pm, may be booked for £12.

Scottish Skier and Boarder Cross Championships

Last year’s event saw an unprecedented amount of requests for entry, with registration filling up in less than two weeks. This year is looking to be just as busy with around 130 competitors expected from all over the UK. The weekend will see competitors battling it out on a man-made course consisting of a wutang, rollers, berms, jumps and the ‘valley of death’. Get your entry in soon to avoid missing out on this exciting event.

Nevis Range Vertical Skimo Race

A different format to others in the skimo series. This one has 545m of ascent and no descent, over a distance of 1.85km.

Glencoe Mountain Skimo Race

A 6km skimo race with a total ascent of 780 metres. Simple two-course meal in Log Cabin restaurant afterwards is included.

Skimo Scotland Race

Whoever completes the route first is the winner. It’s a 5k course with 445m of ascent and 437m of descent. Sponsored by Braemar Mountain Sports. Registration is from 1pm until 2.20pm, race starts at 3pm.

Fun and Snow at Glenshee

A chance to introduce youngsters to the fun of snowsports, as part of World Snow Day. The programme includes snowballing, tubing, ski and snowboard taster sessions, demonstrations, free use of beginners’ lifts and a snow sculpture competition.

Nevis Range Skimo Race

This race covers a distance of 6.64km and is a circular course, starting and finishing at Snowgoose restaurant. Competitors will make the ascent and descent of 763m within the Nevis Range. Prizes will be presented to those who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and the series winners of 2013/2014 will be announced during the ceremony. Entrants must sign up by 16 March, with fees at £35 for licensed Skimo Scotland Racers and £40 for non-licensed competitors.

Nevis Range Vertical Skimo Race 2014

Join Skimo Scotland for their Nevis Range Vertical Race on 23 February. Competitors will make the ascent of 545m from the start at the Snowgoose restaurant up to the top of the Summit run. The race covers a distance of 1.85km. Entry fees are £35 for licensed Skimo Scotland Racers and £40 for non-licensed competitors. Closing date for entries is 16 February.
