The Original Mountain Marathon

A true test of endurance, the Original Mountain Marathon is not for the faint-hearted! This time the event returns to Scotland for the 49th edition. Participants are entirely self-reliant over the course of the race, and need to carry all supplies including tent and food for two days. There are no phones and no GPS! If you think you have what it takes to conquer the Scottish wilderness over two days, check the website for more details on how to enter.

Marathon de Ben Nevis

This challenging 64km ultra run starts and finishes in Fort William, taking in the top of Ben Nevis. You will need to take responsibility for your safety as there are limited marshals and route markers.

MCofS Winter Mountain Safety Talk, Aviemore

Heather Morning, safety adviser for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, gives a wealth of useful information on how to enjoy the mountains safely in winter. She covers navigation, equipment, choice of route, avalanches and weather conditions. Heather, who has been a member of the Cairngorms Mountain Rescue Team for 12 years and a professional mountaineer for 20 years, will illustrate her talks with a set of beautiful photographs, and proceeds will go to the Mountain Safety Trust.

Contact the venue directly to reserve a free place. Pre-lecture dinner will be served at 7pm for an optional £12 cost. Talk begins at 8pm.

Mar Lodge Mountain Film Festival

Back again for the second year – now over two days – and what better place to see some adventure films with a mountain theme than Mar Lodge – the former hunting pile now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland.

There are five films on offer over the two days:

• Citadel
• Late
• A bit like Norway
• Valley Uprising
• Stone Free

Films will be shown in the Craggan Room, and refreshments will be served. Call venue for more information. Tickets from Braemar Mountain Shop, Ballater Outdoor Store and Mar Lodge Ranger Office.
