Sprayway Grendel and Vela jackets

Sprayway launch a Back to the Mountain collection including the Grendel and Vela insulated jackets.

I remember Sprayway jackets from my youth. It’s a long time ago but I can still recall a blue Sprayway waterproof. I remember it did a good job of keeping me dry but it wasn’t what you would call an attractive design or fit.

I don’t think I’ve looked at another Sprayway product since then although this could be because I have my favoured outdoor brands and shop only in my favourite stores.

Yet, Sprayway has a long and acclaimed heritage that goes back to the 1970s and includes products worn on some of the highest peaks in the world, including Everest and K2, by well-known mountaineers such as Doug Scott and Alison Hargreaves.

Now Sprayway has come back on to my radar with its new Back to the Mountain collection for winter 2014, which includes two insulated jackets for men and women, the Grendel and Vela.

The collection brings Sprayway back into the serious outdoors arena with some carefully thought-out and designed products.

In particular, the new Sprayway Grendel and Vela jackets look well made and offer a range of great features, including Gore Windstopper, which is renowned as a high-quality fabric, and stretch panel sides for freedom of movement.

The insulation is synthetic “INSO/THERM”. There is an Insulation split of 80g in the main body area for greater warmth and 60g in the sleeves. This is a good idea and works well to create a jacket that balances weight with warmth.

I find the jacket is useful as a standalone outer layer when temperatures are not too low and as a mid-weight mid-layer on colder days. The jacket is not too bulky so it fits underneath my usual waterproof jacket without a problem.

Other features include:

  • A mountain hood, which will allow you to wear a helmet. (Thankfully, the hood is not too enormous. Too many jackets are now made with hoods that are so big that it’s difficult to compact them when you need to keep out the wind and you are NOT wearing a helmet.)
  • Drawcord adjustable hem
  • Three pockets, including a useful stuff sack inner pocket
  • Ergonomic fit with mountain sleeves and cuffs
  • Men and women’s fit. The length of the jacket is good
  • A range of colours

The RRP is £160. To find stockists see www.sprayway.com or call 01753 497190.
