Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight One Piece

Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight One Piece Suit

Dress for the cold in this one-piece baselayer from Patagonia. Is it a great idea or a hassle to wear?

You know that feeling, when your baselayer top becomes separated from the bottoms and a cold rush of air hits your lower back? This has happened too many times to me when walking in Scotland’s winter mountains or skiing. But never again!

The new Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight One Piece Suit (with male and female versions) is a clever invention. Rather like the currently popular onesie pyjamas, this baselayer all-in-one suit offers a complete baselayer of top and tights in one outfit.

It is made from Patagonia’s warmest and most breathable baselayer fabric in the Capilene family, so it feels ultra soft. The inside is brushed fleece, which offers good insulation, breathability and cosy comfort against the skin. The outside has a smooth-knit face.

Climbing into the one-piece suit is fairly easy because of the long front zip. And the minute you’re in and zipped up it feels oh-so-comfy. The fabric is stretchy and warm but without losing all your freedom of movement.

Taking the sniff test

The baselayer is in fact made from 3.8-oz Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric, which boasts “Polygiene permanent odour control”. Having worn the baselayer  for a brisk and sweaty hill walk and then carried out the sniff test I can confirm this fabric stays non-whiffy. I haven’t walked for days on end in this baselayer so I can’t be sure if it continues to be odour-free but so far so good.

There are lots of other great features with this all-in-one baselayer including:

  • A high collar with anatomical shaping to hold in heat
  • A long front zipper
  • Thumb loops to keep sleeves in place
  • Spandex for stretch and ease of movement
  • The men’s version has a front fly feature.

The other feature that I love is the “side-zip drop-bottom”. This allows you to go to the toilet without having to completely strip off. It’s an excellent feature and one that immediately impressed me when I tried it on.

In addition, the Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition One Piece Suit is made from Recycled Polyester. Patagonia recycles used fizzy drinks bottles, unusable second quality fabrics and worn out garments into polyester fibres to produce many of their clothes.

The one-piece baselayer is aimed at outdoor adventurers in cool to very cold conditions. It would be most suitable for mountaineers, ice climbers, alpinists and skiers, as well as people who really feel the cold on a winter’s walk in Scotland.
