A jacket aimed at people who like to stay dry in the outdoors whatever they are doing
Have you noticed just how beautiful waterproof jackets have become in recent years? I know that colours and looks shouldn’t matter because performance is crucial but if a jacket does what it says on the label and has good looks as well, then it is going to be a winner.
Helly Hansen is a brand that has gone from plain navy blue and black baselayers to a wide range of products in snazzy shades and with fantastic designs. I know because I have a navy blue baselayer from more than 10 years ago and now I own HH kit, including more baselayers, leggings, running kit, mid-layers and waterproof jackets, in a range of wonderful colours and in increasingly great designs.
Helly Hansen Odin Traverse jacket
The first thing that strikes about this new waterproof jacket is the fabulous colours. Women can choose from bright coral and yellow or turquoise and light blue. There is a smart black if that’s what you fancy, but why not go for something bright and beautiful? Men can choose bright yellow with dark blue details or bright turquoise with yellow details (and black!).
The jacket boasts Helly Hansen’s 3-ply ply Helly Tech® fabric which is designed to offer the maximum in waterproofing, breathability and windproofing. Fully sealed seams add to the protection whatever the weather throws at you.
In addition, the jacket has water-resistant zips that give a clean look while maintaining weather protection and low bulk.
- Adjustable cuffs
- Bottom hem adjustment
- Helmet hood with wired and laminated visor
- Durable water repellency treatment (DWR)
- Venting pit zips
- Four pockets
The jacket is aimed at people who enjoy activities such as walking, skiing, running and climbing.
On test: Helly Hansen Odin Traverse jacket
The fit is flattering and the jacket feels lightweight. The design allows for excellent freedom of movement but without being flappy and loose. On the practical side, the fabric is good at keeping out the rain yet works well for allowing sweat to evaporate.
On a high-paced walk/run in wet weather the jacket did exactly as it said it would. I didn’t feel at all clammy, nor did I overheat, despite working hard.
It seems that many new fabrics are challenging the Gore-Tex active products and the HH Odin Traverse is one of them.
I like the pit zips and the roomy but adjustable hood. The sturdy peak is a good design point.
And the colour. Oh, the lovely colour! I have many admiring comments about the colour (mine is coral) and look of this jacket.
