Bergans Cecilie Down Jacket

Berghans Cecile Down Jacket

New women’s down jacket designed in collaboration with leading adventurer

If you are going to create a top item of outdoor clothing it’s a good idea to call on the experts. When designing their new female down jacket, Bergans of Norway decided to ask one of the country’s top adventurers, Cecilie Skog. The result is a beautiful and practical lightweight down jacket.

Cecilie is a 39-year-old Norwegian adventurer. She started her career working as a nurse, but then took to mountain climbing with great enthusiasm. In 2004, she climbed Mount Everest and then began work as a professional adventurer, guide and lecturer.

In 2008, she climbed K2, but the expedition ended in tragedy. Her husband Rolf Bae, who had been climbing with her, died during the descent along with 10 other mountaineers. Two years later, Cecilie completed the first unassisted and unsupported crossing of Antarctica.

She’s certainly had plenty of opportunity to consider what she likes in an item of outdoor clothing.

On test: Bergans Cecilie Down Jacket

Cecile down jacketThe Bergans of Norway Cecilie Down Jacket is specifically aimed at active women. The jacket feels super light despite being very warm and boasting a 750 cuin (cubic inches per ounce) fill. The medium size weighs 390g.

I have worn the jacket as a stand-alone jacket on chilly but dry days and underneath a waterproof outer jacket when I need warmth on wet days.

The jacket is also created with a windproof material. The hand-touch feel of this material is similar to parachute fabric. It is fine and soft, yet very strong and offers excellent windproofing.

Top features of the Bergans down jacket

  • Longer arms with thumb loops for keeping wrists and upper hands warm
  • Trim in contrasting colour and fabric on the torso and arms cuff adds strength and good looks to the design of the jacket
  • Longer back for better coverage and warmth
  • High collar for keeping the wind from your neck and upper body
  • Hand pockets and an extra zipped chest pocket

The Cecilie also compresses into a small ball for easy storage in your rucksack.

A word about sizing: I am a tall UK 10 size and I found that the Bergans small size fits me perfectly.

The jacket comes in three colours, steel blue, bubblegum and forest. It’s priced from around £170 and while it’s not the cheapest on the market, the Bergans Cecilie Down Jacket does offer lots of warmth and a lovely design for its price. To buy see Cunninghams and Surf Mountain.
