If you’re on the hunt for a bright head torch with lots of nifty functions, prepare to see the light. Quite a lot of it actually.
When I started camping, I’d struggle after dark with my old Maglite gritted between my teeth – not comfortable! The other downside with old style torches is that the batteries do run down quickly.
The guys at Alpkit have created a brilliant little multi-function head torch that pushes out 100 Lumens from a single LED – more than enough to comfortably read the paper on a pitch black night. It’s dimmable, (just hold down the on button) and you can widen or narrow the beam at the flick of a lever. If you are night walking, you can angle it to give you a pool of light just in front of you, and there’s an array of other little LEDs below the main beam with a variety of uses.
A green LED helps you to read a map in the dark, while a double red helps you walk at night without blinding your partners. These also flash the SOS signal to attract attention if you are injured. Finally there is a blue light, which has a longer burn time than the main beam. I thought it would be quite good as a nightlight if you were camping with children.
It’s showerproof, and it comes complete with three AAA batteries. It’s a handy addition to any camping kit and I guess it would work well as a back-up cycle light.
