Ramblers Scotland calls for an activity-packed weekend

Has watching the achievements of our athletes in the Commonwealth Games inspired you to raise your own activity levels?

Ramblers Scotland certainly hopes so. The organisation is urging people to “Take the Pledge” to be active outdoors on the weekend of 9-10 August, and to share pictures and films of their adventures to help spread the fitness message and make sure the Games has a knock-on effect. There are some great prizes to be won, including a three-day walking holiday.

Helensburgh walkIt’s the first time Ramblers Scotland has declared a “Get Outdoors Weekend” and the motive is to encourage exercise in a country where 39 per cent of people fall below the minimum recommended activity level, with damaging consequences for health.

Jeannie Cranfield, games legacy adviser for Ramblers Scotland, said: “We’re having a great summer of sport, with the excitement of the World Cup, Wimbledon, the Tour de France and the Commonwealth Games. But the fact is that most of us will only be taking part from the comfort of our sofas.

“We want people to be inspired by these events and to think about how they could be more active themselves. Our Get Outdoors Weekend aims to kickstart a legacy in Scotland of people being more active, more often.

beinneighe2-web “We’re asking everyone to create an adventure for that weekend and share it with us. Whether that’s walks, bike rides, runs, swims, climbs, or events people are planning, we’re asking everyone to send us a film or a photo of themselves having fun, being active and enjoying Scotland to the full.

“Not only should everyone feel healthier and fitter after this weekend, all those that participate will be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes, too!”

Share your picture or film by 15 August to have a chance to win one of the following

  • a three-night guided walking holiday for two, courtesy of HF Holidays, staying in your choice from 19 country houses all over the UK
  • two nights’ accommodation for two at any Scottish youth hostel, courtesy of the Scottish Youth Hostels Association
  • one of five £20 Tiso vouchers

You can make your pledge on Facebook at Ramblers-Scotland, or by tweeting @ramblersscot using the #getoutdoors hashtag.
