The Red Hose Race

30 July, 2016

Dating back to 1508, the Red Hose Race is one of the longest-established foot races in the world. The three-mile race took place around the Feast of St John the Baptist in June until it was moved to become part of the Carnwath Agricultural Show. The winner is traditionally presented with a pair of red socks, which still happens, though there’s now the added bonus of  £100 prize money. As a part of the show, there’s music, dancing, handicrafts and animal classes. Please note: the Red Hose can only be won by a resident of the parishes of Carnwath, Auchengray, Breahead, Carstairs, Covington, Dunsyre, Dolphinton, Elsrickle, Forth, Liberton, Quothquan, Thankerton or Walston.
