Cockenzie Power Station Demolition
26 September, 2015Free
The Cockenzie Power Station chimney stacks in East Lothian have been considered a landmark since they opened in 1967. Generating more than 150 Terrawatt Hours (TWh) of electricity in its lifetime, the station closed two years ago. And now a date has been set for the demolition of the 149m tall twin chimney stacks. Spectators can view the controlled explosion on Saturday 26 September and ScottishPower will be releasing information about the best public vantage points in the weeks before the event.
A raffle has also been organised by Longniddry & District Rotary Club, with the winner of the raffle being the lucky person to press the button that begins the explosion. Raffle tickets are priced at £2 and on sale in various places in East Lothian until August 28. The winner will be announced at the end of August and proceeds from the raffle will be split between local charities and Scottish Power’s charity, Cancer Research.
