Here’s an unusual one. It’s a trail running event in Northumberland with natural obstacles, held to mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden Field. Hundreds of foot soldiers are expected to don head torches and medieval garb, arm themselves with inflatable claymores and pikes and run from dusk into night over a 15km undulating course featuring culverts, tunnels, water and mud. Scots go in one direction, English in the other and they’ll meet noisily halfway, which sounds interesting, to say the least. Runners for the Scotland side pay £25 to 14 August then £30 to closing date of 1 October (England runners pay £1 more). Minimum age 16. Check times.
