Feet in the Clouds by Richard Askwith
Reviewed by Don Currie
This is a welcome reissue of the classic celebration of fell-running culture that raised awareness of the sport and its astoundingly tough practitioners a decade ago. There’s a lyrical introduction by Robert Macfarlane and an interesting new epilogue by Askwith in which he reflects on the renewed popularity of hill races, stimulated in part by his book, and warns against the “counter-forces of commercialism, urbanization, risk-aversion and instant gratification”. There’s a great chapter on the annual Ben Nevis race and its associated characters.
